About the Consultant

Dr. Anita Wilson is a board-certified family physician and Certified Correctional Health Professional (CCHP) with more than a decade of executive leadership experience in correctional healthcare. Passionate about serving justice-involved and other underserved populations, she helps organizations deliver safe, effective, and patient-centered healthcare. Her leadership experience includes serving as Chief Medical Officer for North Carolina prisons, Medical Director of the Central Prison Healthcare Complex, Regional Medical Director for community jails, and Corrections Unit Team Lead for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Throughout her career, she has led multidisciplinary healthcare teams, strengthened regulatory compliance, improved clinical operations, developed healthcare policy, and partnered with correctional, public health, and government leaders to improve healthcare systems. She is also a co-author of the North Carolina Jail Health Toolkit, an evidence-based resource supporting healthcare delivery in local detention facilities. Today, Dr. Wilson partners with correctional agencies, healthcare organizations, and government entities to optimize operations, strengthen compliance, reduce organizational risk, and develop high-performing healthcare teams. Drawing on executive leadership experience across correctional healthcare systems, she delivers practical, collaborative solutions that improve both patient care and organizational performance.  

Dr. Anita Wilson is a board-certified family physician and Certified Correctional Health Professional (CCHP) with extensive experience leading complex healthcare systems serving incarcerated and other underserved populations. Throughout her career, she has been driven by a passion for improving access to quality healthcare for individuals who often face significant barriers to care.

Her leadership experience includes serving as Chief Medical Officer for North Carolina prisons, Regional Medical Director for a multi-state section of community jails, and Corrections Unit Team Lead for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Her roles have allowed her to develop strengths in correctional healthcare administration, quality improvement, compliance, and population health. Memorable moments for Dr. Wilson include being a part of the management team for North Carolina’s correctional COVID-19 response and being a co-author of the North Carolina Jail Health Toolkit, an evidence-based resource supporting healthcare delivery in local detention facilities.

Dr. Wilson brings both clinical expertise and a collaborative leadership approach to every endeavor. Outside of her professional work, she enjoys spending time with her son, traveling, and hosting friends and family. Her commitment to service, leadership, and community continues to shape her work in healthcare consulting, patient advocacy, and correctional health improvement.
